Why do I need a Birth Photographer?
Photographing a birth is not about the angles you may be thinking, in fact I have never seen a birth session client's bits. My lens is pointed much higher; at the mother, her partner, and then the baby/babies. I shoot from angles that protect modesty.
Why can't my partner take a few candid photos? There are many moments to capture throughout labor such as your partners embrace, the first kiss post-birth, your labor support team, and so much more. Your partner needs to be locked in on you; not rushing to hand over a phone to cut the cord or offer assistance. Birth can happen fast, which leads me to "la la land".
During deep labor, it is often referred to as "la la land" because you're a little out of it. Contractions get quicker, harder, and you're going to want that support from your partner to hold a cold compress on your forehead. Chances are you won't be thinking about whether their cellphone camera app is open. Have you seen the candid photos your partner has taken? Jokes aside, you deserve to have these heirloom photos that get placed on the wall or bound into books equally flattering and special.
Your birth photos can also aid in healing.
Rising Cesarean and mortality rates are just come factors contributing to birth trauma. Every birth is unique. Even if you have a seemingly straightforward birth, photos and videos can aid in the healing process. There is nothing like watching the birth video for the first time and hearing your babies first cry again. It may even sound different on film, because you're not in one of the most intense moments of your life. Photos can be a therapeutic tool to working through your birth experience.
I have 4 children myself, and am an experienced Birth Doula.
I'm educated in the stages of labor, how to help and where to be. I'm not shy to offer support. but am able to step back and get ready to capture your birth. While you're running the marathon that is labor, your partner or loved ones in the room are watching. Relying on them to capture images when they're there to whisper encouraging words and hold your hand can be daunting.
These are the images that turn into heirlooms. Carefully placed into frames around your home, bound into albums, and passed down to your children. You deserve more than a few iPhone pictures of one of [if not] the most important day of your life. When you bring life into the world.
BIRTH SESSION FAQ
What should I expect when hiring a birth photographer?
We will have a meet & greet in-person. This is a requirement for birth sessions. We'll talk about your concerns, questions, expectations, birth plan and more. I promise by the time I leave, you'll feel comfortable seeing me in your delivery room. I will arrive during active labor and stay just until around 2 hours postpartum.

Why are birth sessions so expensive?
I am on call for you from 37 weeks on. Your birth may be 2 hours or 32 hours. I make sure to secure reliable childcare and a backup photographer at a moments notice, staying close to home, and not booking any other clients in that time frame until you give birth. Birth photography is extensive, with hours of footage to go through, edit, and create a gallery that encapsulates it all.

When should I hire a birth photographer & what is "on call"?

It is best to meet around the 14-20 week mark. Contracts and deposits/payments should be signed and delivered before the 22 week mark. I book out months in advance, and I go "on call" for you once you hit 3 weeks. This means my phone is on 24/7, I have childcare set up, my bag is packed and I am ready to leave the house for your delivery every day until labor starts.

How can I prepare for my birth session?
Picking out a robe and bra you feel good in is one of my best pieces of advice. Birth is not meant to be this glamorous, posed, and styled shoot. You will fill out a questionnaire, as well as have plenty of time for us to talk to each other at the meet & greet. As an experienced Birth Doula, I can also help you create your Birth Plan.
